At The Akidamy, we believe that fostering a love for movement from a young age is essential for a child’s overall development.
Miss Ashlee, our Perth School’s K3 Educator takes us through why physical literacy isn’t just about being active; it’s about building confidence, coordination, and a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
Starting Young: Infants and Toddlers
Our journey begins with the littlest members of our community. For infants, we incorporate activities like tummy time, which strengthens neck and shoulder muscles, and grasping exercises to enhance fine motor skills. As they grow, crawling challenges are introduced to promote coordination and spatial awareness. These foundational movements are crucial, as early physical activity supports brain development and sets the stage for future skills.
Expanding Horizons
As children grow, their natural curiosity and energy become the driving force behind more complex physical activities. We introduce running, jumping, and agility-based play, all designed to refine gross motor skills. Our approach goes beyond traditional sports; we incorporate sensory play and movement-based learning to support cognitive, social, and emotional development. For instance, obstacle courses not only challenge their physical abilities but also enhance problem-solving skills.
Child-Led Exploration
At The Akidamy, we understand that each child is unique. Our child-led approach means we observe and build upon individual interests. If a child shows enthusiasm for throwing and catching, we introduce targets and coordination games to further develop those skills. For the climbing enthusiasts, we design courses that test balance and encourage strategic thinking. This personalised method ensures that learning is both effective and enjoyable.
Embracing Risky Play
We also recognise the importance of ‘risky play’—activities that allow children to test their limits in a safe environment. Climbing, balancing on beams, or navigating uneven terrains help children develop resilience and self-assurance. By managing risks, they learn to make informed decisions and build confidence in their abilities.
Creating the Right Environment
Our learning spaces are thoughtfully designed to encourage movement and exploration. From open areas for free play to structured zones with equipment that challenges various skill levels, every aspect of our environment supports physical literacy. We believe that when children are given the freedom to move and explore, they develop a natural love for physical activity that lasts a lifetime.
In essence, promoting physical literacy in early childhood is about more than just keeping active; it’s about nurturing a well-rounded, confident, and capable individual. At The Akidamy, we’re committed to providing the opportunities and support each child needs to embark on this lifelong journey of movement and discovery.
