Sleep and Rest at The Akidamy

The Akidamy understands that each child’s sleep, rest and relaxation needs are unique. We ensure that all children have appropriate opportunities to rest and recharge throughout their day, whether that includes sleep or quiet time.

With a focus on the well-being of each child, we create safe, calm environments where children can feel secure while they sleep or relax. This involves regular consultations with families, taking into account cultural and personal preferences, as well as ensuring safe sleep practices as recommended by Red Nose.

Key Elements of Our Sleep and Rest Policy:

  1. Individual Needs: Children’s different developmental stages and individual preferences are always considered. Educators respect each child’s appetite for rest, providing both sleeping and non-sleeping children with options to either rest or engage in quiet activities. Importantly, we never force or withhold sleep from children.
  2. Safe and Secure Sleep Environments: All our sleep and rest environments are designed to meet Australian Standards for safety, ensuring cots, bedding, and sleeping areas are hazard-free, well-ventilated, and properly lit for supervision. We strictly adhere to safe sleep practices, which include physically checking infants regularly, using well-fitted bedding, and removing any items that could pose risks, like loose blankets or soft toys.
  3. Supervision and Monitoring: Educators physically check each child every 10 minutes while they sleep. Baby monitors are used in all sleep rooms to ensure constant observation. Children’s breathing, skin color, and overall safety are closely monitored to ensure a safe sleep environment.
  4. Educator Training and Best Practices: All educators are trained in safe sleep practices. They participate in ongoing professional development, including Red Nose workshops, ensuring they remain informed about the latest recommendations and safety guidelines.
  5. Family Communication: We actively involve families in the development and review of our sleep policies, regularly communicating about children’s sleep patterns and needs. This partnership helps to create a consistent and supportive environment for children both at school and at home.

A Focus on Relaxation

In addition to sleep, our school values the importance of quiet and restful periods during the day. These moments of calm help children recharge, supporting their emotional and physical development. Activities like listening to music, reading, or quiet play allow children to relax without being overstimulated, especially those who may not need to sleep but still benefit from downtime.

By fostering an environment where rest and relaxation are respected, we not only support children’s physical health but also their emotional well-being, helping them to feel safe, secure, and ready to engage in learning and play.
