Gemma’s Journey and Passion for Early Childhood
What inspired you to work in early childhood education/with children?
Because I disliked the education system when I was younger, I looked for ways to help children enjoy learning. Gemma’s personal experience drives her to build a positive and engaging classroom environment, making sure each child finds joy in education from the start.
What do you love most about your Studio?
The children genuinely make me smile and laugh every day! It’s clear that the children are at the heart of Gemma’s work, bringing daily joy and inspiration to her role.
What is your advocate area? (e.g., sustainability, art, music, etc.)
Gemma’s passion for art undoubtedly enriches the creative experiences within her Nursery studio, encouraging children to express themselves freely.
What would you say is your biggest strength as an educator?
Gemma’s genuine approach to education and her talent for forming real connections truly make a difference, helping to create a warm and safe space where our youngest learners can thrive.
The Akidamy has a unique educational philosophy, blending Reggio Emilia, RIE, and Pikler approaches. How do you see this philosophy in action in your studio, and how does it benefit the children’s learning and development?
I enjoy watching the children and seeing what interests them, and I learn a lot from their curiosity. They are encouraged to explore freely in the room, and I thoughtfully plan their next steps based on what they are eager to learn.
The Environment as the Third Teacher is a key principle at The Akidamy. Can you give an example of how the design of your studio or the learning materials you use spark curiosity and encourage exploration for the children in your care?
I suggest using home-to-home materials, which mirror familiar objects from the children’s own environments. This approach can help them feel more secure and at ease as they begin to explore.
The Akidamy emphasises “genuine relationships” and a strong sense of community. How do you foster these connections with children, families, and colleagues to create a supportive and inclusive environment?
I build heartfelt relationships by openly connecting with each child and their family in a respectful and trusting manner. I enjoy taking the time to learn about each child’s interests, routines, and comfort items from home, which helps them feel safe and appreciated in our space.
Gemma’s dedication to understanding and trusting each child is the cornerstone of our community-centred approach, making sure that every family feels warmly welcomed and truly part of our group.
What does the “Nothing but the Child” ethos mean to you in your daily practice, and how does it contribute to a seamless and enriching experience for both children and their families?
It means not having to worry; it removes the daily stress.
As an educator in Perth, what do you think makes The Akidamy a leader in early childhood education, and what is your favourite aspect of being part of The Akidamy family?
The value that the Akidamy provides to children is truly special. Children aren’t rushed; instead, they’re given plenty of time to feel safe and supported, which really helps boost their self-confidence. Plus, the offer of an Atelier is something I’ve never experienced before, and it’s absolutely wonderful for children.
What’s one unique or interesting fact about you that families might not know?
I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to teach in three different countries, and Gemma’s international experience truly adds a rich and diverse perspective to her teaching. It’s inspiring to see how her global background enhances her approach and connects with students from all walks of life.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? (Hobbies, interests, etc.)
I’m an enthusiastic photographer; I enjoy snorkelling and will always seize any chance to go camping or visit a new country.
Is there a particular moment or memory at The Akidamy that stands out to you?
The first time I walked into the Fremantle school was a particularly memorable moment for me.
If you could describe The Akidamy in one word, what would it be?
Nurture. This phrase perfectly captures The Akidamy’s dedication to fostering growth and development in every child.
