Meet Mrs Katelyn, the dedicated School Pedagogista (Educational Leader) at The Akidamy’s Perth School. Since joining The Akidamy family in 2018, Katelyn has been a pivotal part of our community, using her passion for the early years to guide our educational practices and support every studio in fostering a vibrant learning environment.
A Passion for Early Learning
What inspired you to work in early childhood education/with children?
I have a deep love for the early years, particularly how much development occurs in the first five years of life. As educators, we have such an important role in teaching children fundamental skills that they will use and carry with them into adulthood. It’s a responsibility and a privilege I find incredibly rewarding.
Is there a particular moment or memory at The Akidamy that stands out to you?
My first year as a Kindergarten 4 teacher will always hold a special place in my heart. I absolutely loved my little Kindy class and all of the amazing experiences we shared together. It truly solidified my passion for this work.
Katelyn on The Akidamy’s Philosophy
The Akidamy has a unique educational philosophy, blending Reggio Emilia, RIE, and Pikler approaches. How do you see this philosophy in action?
Our unique blend of philosophies comes to life in our deep commitment to respectful, child-led learning. In practice, this means we carefully prepare the environment to foster independence, curiosity, and deep engagement. This approach empowers children to develop confidence, problem-solving skills, and meaningful relationships as capable protagonists in their own education.
The Environment as the Third Teacher” is a key principle at The Akidamy. Can you give an example of how the design of your studio sparks curiosity?
Our studio environments are intentionally designed to be the “third teacher”. We thoughtfully use space, natural light, and curated materials to inspire curiosity. Every studio features inviting shelves with loose parts and natural, open-ended resources that directly reflect the children’s current interests. These provocations are purposefully arranged to spark wonder, creating responsive learning environments that evolve with the children as they lead their own learning.
What does the “Nothing but the Child” ethos mean to you in your daily practice?
To me, it means our primary focus is always on the child’s well-being and holistic experience. As educators, we can dedicate our energy solely to connection and learning. And as a parent myself, I know it makes mornings so much easier for families, as we provide everything necessary for their child’s day. You can learn more about our all-inclusive approach here.

Where did you grow up?
I spent my childhood in London, UK, before my family and I relocated to sunny Perth.
How long have you worked at the Akidamy?
This marks my eighth wonderful year at The Akidamy!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love being outdoors! You can usually find me at the beach, camping, or travelling to new places.
What are three things you can’t live without?
My dog, my family, and the beach.
What’s one unique fact about you that families might not know?
I am a huge Taylor Swift fan!
